Porcelain Veneers

At Edina Dental Care, Dr. Michael Kratz offers porcelain veneers that are custom made to fit your teeth and give you a naturally beautiful, bright smile. As an alternative to traditional crowns or bonding, veneers can correct gaps in teeth, change the shape of teeth, cover intrinsic stains, and in some cases, provide a solution for crooked front teeth.

Porcelain veneers offer the most lifelike results and, also, strengthen teeth. When veneer treatment is performed by an expert, the results are predictably successful and long-lasting.

If you are concerned about the appearance of your smile, Edina Dental Care is the perfect place to call. We’ll be happy to schedule you for a no-obligation exam and consultation with Dr. Kratz, your local smile makeover expert. Custom Dental Crowns

A crown is a tooth-shaped cover that can be placed over a tooth to restore it to its normal or desired shape and size. There are several reasons why Dr. Michael Kratz may recommend a crown. You may need a crown to strengthen a tooth after it has had a large filling, protect a weak tooth from breaking, restore a broken tooth, or hold a bridge in place. Crowns can also cover discolored or misshapen teeth, and dental implants.

Crowns are quite durable, and with proper care, can last decades. The advanced materials and exact fit of today’s crowns ensure your crowned tooth will look like a natural, healthy tooth. Each type of material has its advantages. Dr. Kratz will discuss the alternatives with you and guide you in making the right choice.

At Edina Dental Care, we take pride in providing you with the highest quality care, from compassionate team members to exquisite results. Whether you are in need of a single crown or whole mouth rehabilitation, Dr. Michael Kratz welcomes you to give us a call.

Inlays & Onlays

Dr. Michael Kratz may recommend restoration of a tooth with an inlay or onlay (made of porcelain or gold). An inlay fits within the grooves of a tooth. An onlay fits within the grooves of a tooth but also wraps over the tops of the cusps. These restorations can provide more lasting results than large fillings, and an onlay is a more conservative treatment than a crown when full coverage is not required.

Evidence from scientific research, advanced training, and years of experience will guide Dr. Kratz in making optimal treatment recommendations for restoring your tooth. He will fully inform you about treatment options that appropriately meet your goals, so you can decide the treatment that is best for you.

Composite Bonding

Dr. Michael Kratz can apply and bond tooth-colored resin to a tooth’s surface to restore chipped or worn enamel, fill a cavity, increase the dimensions of a tooth, or cover intrinsic stains and fillings. He applies the resin freehand in layers and sculpts it to result in the ideal dimensions and surface smoothness for the tooth. Because composite resin comes in an extensive range of shades, Dr. Kratz can select the shade that matches the natural enamel of your teeth. The result is a seamless restoration that blends completely into your smile.

When compared with composite bonding, a crown may provide longer-lasting restoration for a damaged tooth and better preserve the tooth for years to come. When compared with veneer treatment, a set of veneers may provide more aesthetic and longer-lasting results when enhancing your smile.

At Edina Dental Care, Dr. Kratz takes into consideration your oral health and function, as well as your goals and preferences, prior to recommending treatment.

We welcome new patients. If you are in need of dental restorations, desire cosmetic changes to your smile, want a second opinion, or are in the market for preventive and ongoing general dental care, give Edina Dental Care a call today at (952) 922-2214.

Tooth Colored Fillings

At Edina Dental Care, Dr. Michael Kratz is delighted to serve patients from Edina and surrounding communities. We welcome new patients seeking quality preventive and restorative dentistry.

If you have developed a cavity, lost a filling, broken a tooth, or are observing other forms of dental damage, it is important to have the problem diagnosed and treated as soon as possible. An immediate appointment can make the difference between a simple restoration or more extensive treatment—and the difference between having a vital, healthy tooth for your lifetime or being faced with tooth replacement.

Whenever you come in for an exam or dental cleaning, we will take a thorough look at all your teeth to find signs of dental decay (caries), excessive wear and cracks in the enamel, and other oral health problems. The latest digital x-ray technology, surgical magnifying glasses, and laser fluorescence aid Dr. Kratz in making a thorough diagnosis. You will be able to see close-up images of your mouth and individual teeth on the chairside computer monitor.

If a dental cavity is found, a simple tooth-colored composite filling is usually all that is needed. The composite resin used for dental fillings comes in a range of natural shades, and Dr. Kratz can select the color that matches the surrounding tooth structure. This way, when you smile and laugh, your fillings are not visible.

Visit Edina Dental Care regularly to stay on top of developing dental problems and minimize the need for dental fillings. Give us a call today at (952) 922-2214.

Tooth Shaping

Tooth shaping is an ideal treatment for someone with normal, healthy teeth who wants to make subtle changes to their smile or requires adjustment of the occlusal surfaces to improve their bite. The treatment involves contouring enamel or bonding composite resin. Porcelain veneers or crowns may be recommended in some circumstances to change the shape of teeth and close gaps between teeth.

Are you experiencing jaw muscle tenderness or more acute pain of the face, neck and jaw that could be due to temporal mandibular joint discomfort (TMJ/TMD)? Individualized treatment for TMD may involve tooth shaping, wearing an occlusal nightguard to relieve jaw muscle tension overnight, and perhaps, a course of orthodontics. Dr. Michael Kratz has had extensive training in optimizing occlusion by making minor modifications to both natural and restored teeth and by using Invisalign© clear orthodontic technology to align teeth.

Whether you have concerns about the appearance of your smile or about your bite that can be addressed by tooth shaping, the first step is to share your concerns with Dr. Kratz and allow him to examine you thoroughly before recommending treatment.

Dental Implant Restoration

At Edina Dental Care, Dr. Michael Kratz is pleased to offer the finest dental implant restorations for one or more teeth that have been lost or should be removed.

A dental implant is a predictable way to replace a tooth’s roots and provide a stable, strong support on which to place an implant crown, multi-unit implant bridge, or in association with three or more additional implants, even a complete denture. The advantages of dental implant treatment are so significant that Dr. Kratz encourages his patients to consider this treatment option.

When compared to traditional crown and bridge treatment, an implant-retained crown or multiunit bridge is more conservative, because it does not require preparing adjacent teeth for crowns. Not only is this highly durable treatment longer lasting, making it cost effective, but the costs of treatment can be afforded in regular payments through third-party financing.

Even edentulous patients, who have lost or are about to lose all their teeth on an arch, will have comfortable, stable and strong function when implants are used to support a snap-on overdenture or to retain a hybrid denture. The resulting smile will be natural in appearance. All possibility of denture slippage will have been eliminated.

If you have worn a removable complete overdenture and want to upgrade to an implant supported or retained denture, Dr. Kratz will be happy to explain what would be involved in your treatment and the resulting quality of life benefits you will enjoy.

For your implant treatment, Dr. Kratz will collaborate with a local periodontal specialist or oral surgeon to ensure greatest treatment success.

Root Canal Therapy

Inside each tooth is the pulp – a soft tissue that contains nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue. If the pulp becomes diseased (such as from decay) or injured (such as from impact), the pulp tissue dies. If this tissue is not removed, the tooth becomes infected and could be lost. During a root canal treatment, the pulp is removed and the root canal is cleaned and sealed off to protect it. A crown or onlay is usually placed over the tooth to make it stronger. With proper care and regular checkups, your restored tooth could last a lifetime.

Contrary to what most believe, a root canal is a relatively simple procedure that involves little to no discomfort. Dr. Kratz and our staff are committed to your comfort, whether than means making sure you are fully numb before the procedure begins or taking the time to address any concerns you may have before we begin.

If you have a tooth that has become painful, and perhaps, the pain increases when you eat hot or cold foods, or drink hot or cold beverages, call for an appointment to diagnose if the pulp of the tooth is diseased. Remember, if an infected tooth pulp does not receive treatment, the infection will become acutely painful, and could lead to tooth loss. With prompt root canal therapy, followed by a crown to restore the tooth to functional strength and beauty, you may preserve the tooth for your lifetime.

Dental Bridges

After one or more teeth are lost, a prosthetic tooth or teeth can be suspended between two crowns that cover natural teeth at either end of the gap. This is called “crown and bridge” treatment. If only one natural tooth is available to support the bridge, a cantilevered bridge might be possible. Not only does a crown and bridge prosthesis restore the smile, it prevents teeth from drifting out of position, helps maintain facial shape, and restores the ability to chew and speak normally. If you have been wearing a partial removable denture, you might want to upgrade to a fixed bridge to improve your eating function and smile confidence.

Although crown and bridge treatment has been the most popular type of treatment for filling gaps for many years, dental implant treatment is now gaining in popularity. A crown or multiunit bridge fixed on an implant does not require the crowning of adjacent healthy teeth. The implant stimulates bone growth, eliminating the jawbone resorption that occurs after tooth roots are lost. An implant-retained crown or multiunit bridge is a more durable treatment with longer-lasting results. And the stable bite and appearance are optimal. Implant treatment instead of traditional crown and bridge treatment has been demonstrated to be highly cost effective, too.

Dr. Michael Kratz of Edina Dental Care is an expert in guiding patients in their decision making. You will stay in control of your treatment decisions, as Dr. Kratz informs you about the advantages and disadvantages of your treatment options. As in the case of dental crowns, there are multiple types of materials that can be used in the creation of your custom prosthesis. If you decide to have crown and bridge treatment, Dr. Kratz will assess all aspects of your oral health to recommend the best bridge option for you.

Dentures

Periodontal disease, tooth decay, and injury can all cause the loss of natural teeth. Today, there are alternative treatments for restoring the function of your mouth and the appearance of your smile. If you have lost all or some of your teeth, a custom-fit denture provides a functional removable replacement for missing teeth. A partial-removable denture can fill in space left by one or more missing teeth and be held in place with attachments on natural teeth. A complete overdenture provides a removable replacement for an entire arch of teeth and is held in place by suction, muscle control, and denture adhesive.

Dr. Kratz will recommend regular checkups to monitor the health of your oral tissues and the fit of your dentures. Dentures typically need to be relined every few years as bone tissue resorbs and the shape of the jaw and overlying gum tissue changes.

Dental implant treatment is a common alternative to dentures. Even if you have worn a denture for years and experienced resorption of the underlying jawbone, you may be able to upgrade to a denture supported on or retained on as few as four implants.

Depending on your unique oral health situation and personal goals, Dr. Kratz will recommend the treatment option that is best for you. We welcome you to schedule a consultation with Dr. Kratz to understand your options. Call Edina Dental Care today at (952) 922-2214.
